Before you say anything, no, I did not relate to Anger in this film. I am nothing like him, and I’m insulted by the comparison. Now let's begin.
The 2015 outing from noted whimsy assembly line (I haven’t felt whimsy since I was six years old and watching a dumpster catch fire, but I digress) and weakeners of a generation, Pixar animation. Personally, I blame them for children’s attachment to toys, given that they gave many toys allegedly heartwarming personalities and character traits. This is forgetting the fact that the protagonists are avatars for the toxic-masculine mythical American cowboy and the same space race that birthed ideas such as “Buzz Lightyear” also saw the Soviet Union send a slew of cosmonauts to die in reentry. But once more, I digress.
Inside Out focuses its attention on Riley, a child moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. Riley, like many children, is ruled by her five emotions, unlike my own childhood where I was ruled by a burning desire to escape The Compound and taste air like the free boys I would see on television.
Riley’s five emotions are Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. In my experience, 3 of these emotions are superfluous, but this is a fiction film so I can suspend my disbelief if only for a few moments.
Riley’s struggle comes from her “core memories” being threatened and her losing control of her emotions, and so Joy and Sadness go on an adventure to save Riley from herself and restore order in her mind.
I concede that the film has a charm, and unlike some Pixar films, it held my attention instead of driving me into another blackout where I wake up covered in deer blood and human teeth (I’m looking at you, Brave).
This film was well worth the 94 minutes that I took out of my daily routine of screaming at chairs and Greco-Roman wrestling
Overall, this is another fine addition to the Pixar catalog, and is a heartwarming adventure for viewers young and old
5/5 stars
